Two High-Level UN Human Rights Delegations Visit Darfur

The Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women, Rashida Manjoo, and the Independent Expert on the situation of human rights in Sudan, Aristide Nononsi, visited Darfur consecutively from 18 to 21 May 2015 as part of their missions to Sudan.

Ms. Manjoo visited Tabit and the Abou Shouk camp for internally displaced persons (IDPs), near El Fasher, North Darfur, and El Geneina, West Darfur. During her visit she met UNAMID’s officers, including the Acting Joint Special Representative, Abiodun Bashua, and interacted with representatives from the government and civil society organizations on issues related to her mandate.

“I am here on the invitation of the Sudan Government to have information in order to make recommendations” said the Special Rapporteur during her visit to El Geneina, on 20 May. “I am interested in how the West Darfur State is meeting the goal of eliminating violence against women and girls”, she added.

The Independent Expert on the situation of human rights in Sudan, Aristide Nononsi, arrived in El Fasher following a 5-day visit to the capital Khartoum. He also met with the UNAMID’s leadership, community leaders, government officials and residents of the Abu Shouk camp for internally displaced people.

Mr. Nononsi concluded his visit to Darfur in Nyala, South Darfur, where he met Government officials led by the Wali and community leaders from Otash and Dereig IDPs camps.

“I am here to listen to you and to assess the effectiveness of the human rights institutions on the ground and how we can provide assistance and capacity-building to those institutions”, he said after meeting the Wali in Nyala.
