South Darfur community benefits from paralegal workshop

On 8 December 2014, UNAMID and UNHCR organized a capacity building session targeting more than 30 community leaders from Kalma camp for internally displaced persons and rural court judges from Kass Locality in South Darfur, with the aim to improve legal protection for vulnerable persons.

The workshop discussed issues including personal status law, criminal procedures, traditional justice and the International Humanitarian Law.

Addressing the participants, Mr. Ahmed Aden, Rule of Law team Leader in South Darfur, explained that the workshop was part of UNAMID and UNHCR’s priorities to consolidate peace that requires capacity building of structures for peaceful settlement of disputes focusing on IDPs. He also added that implementing capacity building for paralegals, IDPs leaders and rural courts’ judges improves access to justice for all and promotes the rule of law in Darfur.

On his part, Mr. Farah Omer, UNHCR Head of Office in South Darfur urged the participants to actively participate and share views during the workshop. He also assured them of more such capacity building workshops to be organized for the community and law enforcement personnel and paralegals to contribute to the implementation of rule of law in Darfur.
