Senior UNAMID officials meet with Sudanese Presidential Adviser in-charge of Darfur file

El Fasher, 11 June 2009 -- Sudanese Presidential Adviser in-Charge of the Darfur file, Dr. Ghazi Salaheddin, today paid an official visit to UNAMID Headquarters in El Fasher. He was received upon arrival, by UNAMID Joint Special Representative (JSR), Mr. Rodolphe Adada, Deputy Joint Special Representative; Mr. Henry Anyidoho; and other Senior Officials.

Mr. Salaheddin was accompanied by Goverment of Sudan senior officials, including the Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs, Mr. Abdalbagi Aljailani, and by the Commissioner of Humanitarian Aid, Dr. Mohamed Abdel Rahman Hassabo.

During his visit, Dr. Ghazi Salaheddin was briefed by UNAMID officials on the work of the mission according to its mandate. Both sides discussed issues related to the Darfur conflict, including the political process, humanitarian situation, security on the ground, as well as the general election process. Dr. Salaheddin reiterated his Government of the Sudan full support to UNAMID and stated that he was looking forward to strengthening cooperation between his Government and the Mission. He informed UNAMID officials on the outcome of his trip to El Fasher, as well as on the interactions and meetings he had with representatives of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). He expressed satisfaction at the level of cooperation between UNAMID and the Government of the Sudan.

On his part, JSR Adada expressed gratitude to Dr. Ghazi Salaheddine for paying one of his first visits in his new assignment as responsible of the Darfur file to UNAMID. The JSR also reaffirmed UNAMID commitment to work with the Government in order to find a lasting solution to the Darfur conflict. In this regard, he informed that UNAMID is ready to assist the people living in the IDP camps and who wish to return to their respective villages, through the Mission’s recovery and development projects and thanks to its provision of security
