Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemns deadly attack on UN peacekeepers

4 December 2009 -- On 4 December at approximately 4:15 p.m. local time, a military convoy of the UN-African Union Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) escorting a water tanker, was ambushed by unidentified armed assailants at Saraf Umra in North Darfur. Two peacekeepers were killed in the attack, a third subsequently died from his wounds, and several others were wounded.

The Secretary-General deplores this attack on AU-UN peacekeepers in Darfur and calls on the Government of Sudan to do its utmost to ensure that the perpetrators are swiftly identified and brought to justice.

The Secretary-General expresses his condolences to the families of the peacekeepers who lost their lives, and reiterates his appreciation for their service and commitment to the search for peace in Darfur.
