On 7 April 2014, Rwandans serving in the African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) commemorated the 20th anniversary of the genocide in Rwanda in 1994, during which thousands of innocent people were brutally killed.The event took place in the Rwandan 41 Battalion at the UNAMID headquarters in El Fasher, North Darfur. It was attended by UNAMID personnel, representatives from the Government of Sudan (GoS) and community leaders. The attendees observed one minute of silence as a mark of respect toward all those who had lost their lives.
The programme also included human interest poems and peace songs. The speeches given on the occasion encouraged Rwandans to build a bright future for succeeding generations and maintain peaceful coexistence in their country.
