25 February; UNAMID handed over its Team Site in Menawashi, South Darfur, to the Government of Sudan. The Wali (Governor) of South Darfur State, Government delegation from Khartoum, local officials, representatives of local communities, including IDPs, youth and women attended the ceremony where the handover documents were signed by Mr. Musa Mahdi Isaac, Wali of South Darfur State, on behalf of the Government of Sudan, and Mr. Houston Fergusson, Director of the Mission Support Division, on behalf of UNAMID. Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Musa Isaac reiterated the Government’s commitment to use the Team Site as a Community Development College, affiliated to the University of Nyala, and urged the local community members to take full ownership of the Team Site and help transform it into the College. Local community leaders thanked the Team Site personnel and the Tanzanian Battalion for all the support and services extended to the local population over the past nine years since the establishment of the UNAMID Team Site in Menawashi. Mr. Fergusson in turn, expressed UNAMID’s gratitude to the Government of Sudan and local community members for their cooperation with the Mission’s Team Site personnel and expressed his sincere hope that the Team Site premises will be utilized for civilian purposes as planned and continue to serve the needs of the local community. The handover is part of the Mission’s drawdown plan in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2559 (2020) which terminated UNAMID mandate as of 31 December 2020. Photo by Zurab Elzarov, UNAMID.
