Indonesian FPU introduced to IDP population in North Darfur

21 October 2008 -- As part of a familiarization tour for the Indonesian Formed Police Unit (FPU), UNAMID Police Commissioner, Michael Fryer, accompanied by the military component of the mission, visited Abu Shouk and Al Salaam Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in North Darfur

The purpose of the visit was to introduce the newly arrived Indonesian Formed Police Unit to the local population, in particular the leaders of the camp (Sheiks). The visit also intended to locate the site for the new police community policing station in the two camps.

The unit, which arrived in Darfur on 12 October 2008 to join UNAMID, has been conducting intensive patrols to acquaint itself with the region.

UNAMID FPUs are expected to give needed support to the work of the UNAMID Police, particularly in providing security to the Internally Displaced Persons throughout the region.
