East Darfur Nomadic School Receives Educational Materials

On 18 November 2014, UNAMID and UNICEF presented school materials to Bekhela Elementary School in a nomadic community located some 105 kilometers south-east of El Daein town, East Darfur. The handover was conducted in the presence of Mr. Hammad Banani, Director, Nomadic Education, Ministry of Education, East Darfur and the local community. Items presented included desks and chairs, school bags and stationery. The activity was part of efforts to support education in the region.

In her remarks on behalf of the UNAMID Head of Office in East Darfur, Ms. Ana Maria AJ Valerio, Civil Affairs Officer, reiterated the Mission’s commitment to providing support education across Darfur. Ms. Valerio also urged the community to ensure their children attend school and to work toward increased enrolment for girl students in the upcoming academic year.

On his part, Sheikh Hamdan Mahmoud thanked UNAMID and UNICEF for their support. Bekhela Elementary School has a total of 105 students, including 20 girls, and is supported by 5 teachers.

Additionally, early this year, UNAMID provided beds to the community’s health center as a means to help enhance patient care in the area.
