Dozens of Sierra Leonean police officers join UNAMID

27 May 2009 -- The first batch of more than 60 new Sierra Leonean police officers has arrived today in El Fasher, North Darfur, to start work with the joint African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID). Some 40 officers flew in today, with the remaining 22 due tomorrow. They will be deployed around the region after completing their induction training over the next two weeks.

UNAMID’s Deputy Police Commissioner, Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi, welcomed the new officers from Sierra Leone (52 men and 10 women), saying their arrival will help strengthen the efforts of the Mission’s police component to bring peace and stability to Darfur.
