Conference on Peaceful Coexistence Begins in Central Darfur
On 30 October 2014, UNAMID, in collaboration with the Government of Central Darfur, organized a conference for members of the native administration mechanism in the region. The conference was aimed at enhancing the efforts made by committees promoting peaceful coexistence as well as agricultural protection in order to safeguard the harvest season.
The two-day event, held under the theme “Peaceful coexistence among different tribes,” bought together representatives of civil administration, civil society organizations, native administration as well as local security officials and was attended by the Wali of Central Darfur, Al Shartai Jaffer Abdul Hakam Ismail, and other senior government officials, representatives of civil society, native administration leaders and UNAMID.
The conference is expected to provide a platform for participants to interact and discuss practical ways to help reinforce peaceful coexistence among different communities and tribes, and particularly between farmers and nomadic communities. Participants will also review coordination aspects between native administration and security officials; address issues related to community dialogue, social peace, security and stability in the region and exchange ideas regarding practical means of implementing the crop protection plan in Central Darfur
