Central Darfur workshop focuses on youth, peace

On 18 May 2014, UNAMID, in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Federation of Sudanese Youth Union, hosted a workshop in Zalingei, Central Darfur, under the theme of “Darfur and Peace: Myths and Realities.” The event drew more than 60 participants from local Government institutions, youth organizations, women's unions and nearby camps for displaced people.

Addressing the workshop participants, Mr. Lameck Kawiche, UNAMID's Head of Office for Central Darfur, highlighted the importance of young people coming together in workshops, seminars and debates to seek solutions to the challenges facing Darfur. He urged all those attending the workshop, especially the young people in the audience, to focus on building a culture of peace.

Following the speeches and later discussions, the workshop participants consolidated a set of recommendations on how best to move forward on peace in Darfur. These recommendations included developing new laws and regulations to support education and conducting similar seminars and workshops in communities across the state to cultivate a culture of peace and discourage violence.
