24 November 2009 - A delegation of the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council today met with regional Government officials, community leaders and UNAMID staff in North Darfur.

The delegation, headed by Ambassador Joseph Nsengimana of Rwanda, was in El Fasher to gain a first-hand assessment of the security situation and to take part in discussions with UNAMID officials on matters related to the implementation of the Mission’s mandate.

The day began with a presentation by the Wali (Governor) who highlighted the progress the region has made over the past six years in reducing crime, increasing commerce, building better infrastructure and improving the educational system. The group later proceeded to meetings with UNAMID. The day concluded with a visit to the Abu Shouk Camp, an IDP camp established seven years ago in El Fasher, where the delegation listened to concerns of community leaders.

Today's activities formed part of a three-day visit to Sudan by the Peace and Security Council.

This is the Council's first field mission outside of its Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, headquarters.
