Abdul Kamara of Sierra Leone appointed AU-UN Deputy Joint Special Representative in Darfur

United Nations Secretary-General and African Union Commission Chairperson announced on 25 September 2014 the appointment of Abdul Kamara of Sierra Leone as Deputy Joint Special Representative for the African Union - United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID).

Mr. Kamara brings to the position extensive experience following a distinguished career in the African Development Bank, having served as Resident Representative in the Sudan Country Office and Manager of the Research Division and Senior Agricultural Economist. Mr. Kamara also contributed to development policy research in East, West and Southern Africa in his capacity as Research Scientist at the International Water Management Institute in South Africa and Ghana.


Mr. Kamara holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics and Rural Development from the Institute of Rural Development of the Georg-August-University of Göttingen, Germany. Born in Tambiama, Sierra Leone, in 1963, he is married and has three children.

 


This is the second senior UNAMID appointment announced by the UN Secretary-General and the AU Commission Chairperson this month; having appointed Abiodun Oluremi Bashua as Deputy Joint Special Representative of UNAMID on 17 September 2014.


Both Mr. Bashua and Mr. Kamara assume their respective roles as UNAMID Deputy Joint Special Representatives while Mohammed Ibn Chambas remains fully engaged with UNAMID in his role as Joint Special Representative and Chief Mediator until he takes on his new responsibility as Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa.
