31 Aug 11 - UNAMID JSR Ibrahim Gambari holds talks with senior Chinese officials in Beijing

31 August 2011 - At the invitation of the Government of China, UNAMID Joint Special Representative (JSR) and Joint Chief Mediator a. i., Professor Ibrahim Gambari, started on 28 August 2011 a three-day visit to Beijing to engage with the Chinese authorities on the Doha peace process and the efforts of UNAMID in advancing peace and prosperity in Darfur.

During his visit, JSR Gambari held extensive meetings with senior Chinese officials, including Vice Minister Zhai Jun
and Ambassador Lui Guijin, China’s Special Envoy for Darfur. They discussed the situation in Darfur, the work of UNAMID, as well as the next steps in the consolidation of the peace process, particularly the implementation of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD) and the agreement signed on 14 July 2011 between the Government of the Sudan and the Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM).

JSR Gambari briefed his interlocutors on UNAMID’s efforts in support of the peace process: preparations for the
inaugural meeting of the International Follow-Up committee (IFC) as well as the implementation of the DDPD, notably
through the Cease-fire Commission, which started its work on 22 August 2011. Professor Gambari also discussed the
efforts of the UNAMID in advancing its mandate, particularly in the areas of protection of civilians, facilitation of
the delivery of humanitarian assistance to those in need and support early recovery and development.

Professor Gambari’s interlocutors reiterated China’s confidence in the leadership of UNAMID and expressed strong support for the work of the Mission, noting its important role in efforts to achieving a lasting peace in Darfur. They also
stressed the continuous support of the People’s Republic of China to the peace process, its commitment to the
implementation of the DDPD, the signed agreement of 14 July and called for the early commencement of the Darfur-based Political Process (DPP).
