UN, AU and GoS hold consultation on deployment of UNAMID

El Fasher --- Senior officials of the United Nations, the African Union and the Government of Sudan met yesterday, 27 January 2008 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to discuss ongoing issues related to the deployment of the joint UN-AU peacekeeping mission in Darfur (UNAMID). The meeting was attended by the African Union Commissioner for Peace and Security, Mr. Said Djinnit, the United Nations Undersecretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Mr. Jean-Marie Guehenno, the UN-AU Joint Special Representative for Darfur, Mr. Rodolphe Adada and the Undersecretary at the Sudan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mutrif Siddiq.

The meeting was also aimed at preparing for high-level discussions on the deployment of UNAMID, scheduled to take place on the margins of the forthcoming African Union summit in Addis Ababa. Among the issues discussed was the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) between UNAMID and the Government of the Sudan. The discussions were constructive and the parties indicated that they all look forward to the successful conclusion of the SOFA negotiations, as soon as possible.
