25 Jan 11 - Heavy fighting in Tabit, North Darfur

25 January 2011 - UNAMID confirms reports of intense fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and Sudan Liberation Army / Minni Minnawi movements in Tabit, located approximately 45km south of El Fasher, North Darfur.

The clashes, which are still ongoing, began yesterday at approximately 1920hrs. UNAMID peacekeepers have been prevented from entering the area by SAF officers invoking security concerns. Despite the lack of access, Mission peacekeepers continue to seek further information, especially about the possible impact of the fighting on the local population. There are no indications as to any casualties or whether other movements might be involved.

UNAMID Joint Special Representative Ibrahim Gambari is very concerned by this latest outbreak of violence. JSR Gambari reminds belligerents that the Darfur conflict cannot be solved militarily and that peace can only be achieved through an inclusive political process, not through the use of force.
