Chairperson of the African Union Commission Meets UNAMID Deputy Joint Special Representative to Discuss the Situation in Kalma IDP Camp

El Fasher, 24 August 2010 – On 23 August, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Dr. Jean Ping, received UNAMID Deputy Joint Special Representative, Mohamed Yonis, who conveyed a message from the AU-UN Joint Special Representative, Professor Ibrahim Gambari, relating to the situation in Kalma IDP camp, one of the largest camps in South Darfur. The camp has recently witnessed deadly violence between IDPs who support and reject the Doha Peace Process. Although tension in the camp has de-escalated, there remains long-standing insecurity in the camp.

In his briefing, DJSR Yonis emphasized the collaboration between the Government of Sudan and UNAMID in ensuring the safety and security of IDPs in Kalma. He noted the Mission’s commitment to maintaining calm and order in the camp.

Reiterating the African Union’s support for all efforts to resolve problems in Kalma, the Chairperson urged UNAMID to continue working closely with the Government of Sudan in using peaceful means to resolve the situation.
