23 Jun 11 - Government forces, armed movements pledge against child soldiers

23 June 2011 - Following talks with UNAMID’s Child Protection component led by Mr. Boubacar Dieng to Kaguro, in Jebel Marra on 22 June, General Commander of the Sudan Liberation Army / Abdul Wahid faction, Mohammed Adam Abdelsalam Tarada, issued a renewed command order prohibiting the use and recruitment of child soldiers.

The meeting came as a continuation of a discussion in Gur Lumpung in Jebel Marra in December 2010.

Upon their return to El Fasher, the UNAMID team then met with a government military liaison officer who requested the Mission’s assistance in training soldiers with the Sudan Armed Forces on child protection.

The developments were welcomed by UNAMID Joint Special Representative Ibrahim Gambari, who announced the Mission’s intention to continue this transparent dialogue with all parties to the conflict and expressed appreciation for their cooperation.
