23 December 2008 -- UNAMID bids farewell to peacekeeper

El Fasher, 23 December 2008: The African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur today bid farewell to one of its peacekeepers, the Late Private Isaac Adegbaju, who died after a short illness on 15 December 2008 in North Darfur.

The mission Chief of Staff, Mr. John Almstrom, on behalf of the Joint Special Representative, Mr. Rodolphe Adada, expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family of the late peacekeeper, to the Nigerian Contingent and Government of the Republic of Nigeria

UNAMID Chief of Staff, Brigadier General George Kyaka, on behalf of the Force Commander, General Martin Luther Agwai, described his death “as a terrible shock, not only to his family but also the Nigerian contingent and the entire UNAMID family.” Brig General Kyaka expressed gratitude to the Nigerian Government.

Also speaking at the farewell ceremony in El Fasher, was Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Ofoegdu on behalf of the Nigerian Battalion Commanding Officer, he summarized Private Agboju’s service adding that, “late Private Isaac Adegbaju was admired due to his unequalled obedience, efficiency and great enthusiasm towards his work.” Private Adegbaju together with many of our departed colleagues have paid the supreme price to bring peace to Darfur.”
