23 Dec 10 - Update on security situation

23 December 2010 - Following outbreak of fighting last week, UNAMID continues to provide protection to the increasing number of displaced persons seeking refuge outside the Mission’s team sites in Khor Abeche, Shangil Tobaya and Shearia. The Mission is currently in discussions with aid groups and state officials on the provision of a humanitarian response.

In Khor Abeche, 83 km northeast on Nyala, UNAMID peacekeepers report that over two thousand Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are now sheltered outside the team site. Urgent humanitarian relief has been requested and the Mission has been approached by the IDP leaders to assist in clearing suspected unexploded ordnance in the area.

The number of IDPs around UNAMID’s team site in Shangil Tobaya has now grown to over 4000. The situation remains tense, with gunfire heard overnight. However no casualties or injuries have been reported.

In Shaeria, UNAMID and local police continue to investigate reports of an armed attack on the IDP camp. There are currently 360 displaced persons outside the Mission’s team site.

UNAMID will work to deter clashes in affected areas through increased military and Formed Police Unit presence on the ground.
