22 May 11 - JSR Gambari meets with UN Security Council

22 May 2011 - Security, humanitarian and political developments, and support to the peace negotiations in Doha were at the core of UNAMID Joint Special Representative (JSR) Ibrahim Gambari’s briefing to the United Nations Security Council today in Khartoum.

The JSR, accompanied by the Force Commander Lt Gen Patrick Nyamvumba, told the Council that UNAMID had increased the number, scope and intensity of its patrols. Further, through assisting in recent humanitarian operations, the Mission and several UN agencies have been able to access areas in Jebel Marra which had routinely been cut off from humanitarian aid.

Professor Gambari also expressed his concern over the increase in restrictions imposed on the Mission’s peacekeepers, continued displacement of civilians, renewed clashes and the resulting strain on water resources, food and other essential services.
