22 July 2011 - The smoke seen billowing from the old El Fasher airport at 920 a.m. Friday 22 July was an aircraft accident exercise conducted by the UNAMID Aviation Section and Sudan Civil Aviation Authorities. The emergency workers lit a controlled fire of tires and extinguished it with a chemical spray from a UNAMID airport firefighting truck The main hose emits 6,000 litres of fluid per minute. The director of El Fasher Airport and the chief air controller were among the Sudanese officials participating in fire response exercise, the first of its kind at this airport in four years.
