21 Jun 11 - West Darfur native administration receives UNAMID support

21 June 2011 - More than 700 residents of West Darfur’s Sirba locality were yesterday joined by UNAMID’s regional leadership in marking the opening of the region’s new native administration headquarters.

The hall’s construction was funded by a UNAMID Quick Impact Project (QIP) to support the local leaders’ vital role in resolving conflicts and mediating peace among ethnic groups. “The role of traditional leaders in democratic governance,” said Dysane Dorani, the Mission’s regional Head of Office, adding that the facility would “promote communal integration and improve harmonious relationships through social meetings and activities among tribes in a warm conducive atmosphere.”

Native administration leaders in Darfur are often called on to arbitrate disagreements over land, domestic disputes, criminal cases and inter-tribal tensions.
