21 Dec 10 - Update on security situation

21 December 2010 - An unknown group of armed men attacked an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp last night in Shaeria, 45 km south east of Khor Abeche in South Darfur, burning down a part of the settlement.

Several of the camp’s residents fled to a UNAMID team site located nearby, joining over 300 IDPs who gathered there after clashes last week between Sudanese Armed Forces and Sudan Liberation Army / Minni Minnawi in Khor Abeche. No casualties from the incident have yet been reported and UNAMID teams are currently conducting a patrol of the area.

Meanwhile the Mission continues to seek clearance for humanitarian missions to Khor Abeche and reports a steady increase in the number of IDPs surrounding the UNAMID team site.
