19 September 2008 -- UNAMID facilitates a reconciliation meeting between the GOS and Minni Minawi

Sudanese Vice President Ali Osman Taha praised UNAMID efforts for its contribution to make a success his meeting today in Al Fasher with Minni Minawi, the Senior Assistant to the Sudanese President and Head of the Transitional Darfur Regional Authority.

Following a closed meeting between Taha and Minawi both sides announced in a press conference the turning of a new page in their commitment to and cooperation in the full implementation of the Darfur Peace Agreement and the formation of a joint military committee to ensure halting of all hostilities.

Vice President Taha thanked UNAMID for its contribution to the success of the above meeting and reiterated Sudan’s commitment to work with UNAMID towards achieving peace in Darfur, solve all pending issues and clear any obstacles that my hinder the work of UNAMID.

General Henry Anyidoho, the Deputy Head of UNAMID and on behalf of the Head of the Mission Mr. Rodolphe Adada congratulated Mr. Taha and Mr. Minawi for the agreement they have reached and hoped that such agreement would attract the non-signatories of the DPA to join in the peace process in a more comprehensive agreement.

Speaking to the press at Al Fasher airport, Mr. Anyidoho expressed full satisfaction over the role that UNAMID played, mainly in bringing Mr. Minawi from his base to Al Fasher and back on board a UNAMID helicopter and providing him with all the necessary logistics and support he needed for his journey.

Mr. Minawi thanked UNAMID for its support and praised the role it played in facilitating his meeting with the Vice President.

Accompanying Mr. Anyidoho in his meeting with Vice President Taha and with Mr. Minawi were the Deputy Head of Mission Mr. Hocine Medili, the UNAMID Force Commander Martin Luther Agwai and a number of High-ranking officials in the mission.
