19 Jan 11 - UNICEF brings water to Jebel Marra region

19 January 2011 - UNICEF and the Government of Sudan’s Water, Environment and Sanitation project, with support of UNAMID, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and the World Health Organization, have drilled 13 boreholes in several villages located in a mountainous area east of Jebel Marra. In this region, thousands of people have not had access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation.

Men and women from Sartony and Kagoro areas, located approximately 100 kilometers west of El Fasher, North Darfur, were trained on operation and maintenance of hand pumps prior to the provision of services. Working in close collaboration with the local communities, a plan was prepared to rollout sanitation and hygiene promotion activities in the villages.
