18 July 2010 - Following torrential rains last weekend, UNAMID today donated 1500 liters (7.5 barrels) of diesel to help clean up El Geneina, West Darfur.

The municipality was hard hit by the downpour, which destroyed a large number of building, leaving many people homeless and businesses affected. The diesel will power much of the heavy machinery needed to remove debris and unblock drainage systems.

Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) living in camps on the outskirts of the town were most affected as the majority of homes there are built with straw, mud bricks and plastic sheeting. The rains have also worsened roads, making it difficult for trucks bearing fuel, goods and humanitarian aid to reach the area.
