17 Apr 12 - UNAMID inaugurates educational projects in North Darfur

17 April 2012 - UNAMID military component continues its engagement with the Darfuri population assisting in the implementation of educational projects for the community. Five new projects have been inaugurated this week in North Darfur state by UNAMID Force Commander Lt Gen Patrick Nyamvumba.

In El Fasher, the Mission and the NGO El Fasher Rural Development Network built a theatre and a teachers’ conference hall at Umm Ayeman Basic School for Girls. This initiative is aimed at enhancing children’s learning skills and improving the understanding of literature through drama performance.  

In collaboration with the North Darfur Minister for Education, UNAMID also equipped in El Fasher a computer training centre for secondary school teachers and students, which can accommodate up to 100 persons. The Mission provided 28 computers, a screen, a projector and furniture.

Rwandese peacekeepers based in Kabkabiya completed the construction of two buildings for Nurselam and Elsalam basic schools with the participation of the local community. Similarly, in Saraf Umra, the same battalion built three classrooms and a toilet for Safra Jami basic school.

Yesterday, at the inauguration of schools, the Force Commander said that UNAMID is committed to bring sustainable peace in Darfur and “investing in education is investing on the future generation.” He also assured that UNAMID will continue its support to the communities.
