Khartoum, 16 January 2011 – A meeting on the Darfur Peace Process and next steps was convened yesterday by the AUHIP, the Government of the Sudan, the Government of the United States, and UNAMID. The talks were chaired by AUHIP President Thabo Mbeki in Khartoum.

The discussions addressed the current situation with respect to the Doha Peace Process and the prevailing security situation, with a focus on how best to proceed with commitments entered into toward expediting the all-inclusive Darfur Political Process leading to the Darfur-Darfur Conference.

The parties agreed that in order to quickly resolve the Darfur conflict, it is necessary to initiate an immediate, concurrent and complementary Darfur Political Process on the ground.

The process will be led by the AUHIP and UNAMID. The Government of the Sudan and the Mission have agreed to work together to promote the enabling a healthy political and stable security environment in Darfur for the process.
