The summit served as a lead-up to the International Water Conference for Darfur, scheduled for February 2011 in Khartoum. The parties, jointly with the Qatari Embassy, the World Bank and the African Development Bank, discussed the objectives of the upcoming conference, its content and a donor appeal strategy.

Access to water has been cited by various actors as a key conflict driver in Darfur and, accordingly, has taken center-stage in discussions on peace-building and conflict resolution.
