14 Jun 11 - Disarmament programme helps bring water to former fighters

14 June 2011 - UNAMID today delivered 10,000 liters of water to the community of El Sereif, a remote desert village located 45 km north of El Fasher in North Darfur, to aid the construction of several much-needed water pumps.

This project is the latest in UNAMID’s ongoing collaboration with the North Sudan Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Commission (NSDDR), to construct and develop water facilities in support of disarmament programmes. Today, the UNAMID team, accompanied by representatives from the UNDP, UNICEF and the NSDDRC, also assessed challenges to the project’s completion, for which the Mission will be providing technical and logistical support.

In January of 2011, nearly 100 children associated with armed movements were registered in a voluntary exercise El Fasher. Since July 2009, more than 1,000 children have been released by different armed movements in Darfur.
