14 April 11 - Women ambassadors discuss gender issues in North Darfur

14 April 2011 - A delegation of eight women ambassadors from around the world and accredited to the African Union, arrived today in El Fasher, North Darfur, to meet with UNAMID officials, women’s groups and female legislators in the region and to hear their concerns.

The group, led by Kenya’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and the African Union, Dr. Monica Juma, were welcomed by the UNAMID Force Commander, Lt Gen Patrick Nyamvumba, the Police Commissioner, Mr. James Oppong-Boanuh, and the Mission’s senior officials. UNAMID reported on gender issues and its efforts, training and awareness campaigns to combat sexual and gender-based violence.

The envoys later met with representatives of internally displaced women, female legislators and state officials. Discussed were ongoing problems facing women from all walks of life in Darfur.

On Friday, the ambassadors will travel to Nyala where they will hold talks with women community leaders. They will then go to South Sudan before concluding their visit in Khartoum.
