13 Oct 10 - UNAMID Acting DJSR Carey meets Kalma leaders

13 October 2010 - UNAMID’s newly arrived Acting Deputy Joint Special Representative (Ag DJSR) Margaret Carey yesterday met with sheikhs (leaders) from Kalma Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Nyala, South Darfur.

The sheikhs laid out their most pressing needs in terms of security, food, health care and education. Ag DJSR Carey expressed the Mission’s keenness to help peacefully resolve any outstanding issues. “We will work together with IDPs and the government to improve security and improve the lot of displaced persons,” she said.

The Ag DJSR also met with the state’s Deputy Wali (Governor) to discuss ways in which their mutual support can help enhance security and achieve stability in the region. “UNAMID is our real partner,” said the Deputy Wali, commending his government’s relationship with the Mission. He requested UNAMID’s logistic support in furthering tribal reconciliation efforts, particularly in remote areas.

Ms. Carey later presided over a ceremony where basic school supplies were donated by UNAMID’s Nigerian battalion to a primary school within the camp.
