13 July 10 - UNAMID, TDRA to circulate tribal peace accord

13 July 2010 - UNAMID’s Civil Affairs component yesterday met with representatives of the Transitional Darfur Regional Authority (TDRA) in El Geneina, West Darfur, to discuss a joint venture aimed at promoting the peace agreement signed by Rizeigat and Misseriya tribes on 28 June, which put an end to three months of bloodshed.

The Mission’s representatives spoke with TDRA Chairman of the Peace & Reconciliation Commission Mr. Asaad Bahreldin and the Reconciliation Committee’s rapporteur, Mr. Yagoub Mohammed Ali, about a strategy for the publication and widespread dissemination of the peace agreement in remote communities.

It is hoped that such a project will help defuse residual tensions in these areas and encourage commitment to implementing the agreement thereby preventing another cycle of violence.

UNAMID will help fund the plan as a Quick Impact Project (QIP). In October of last year, the Commission Chairman led a month-long peace tour of West Darfur, partly supported by a UNAMID QIP, to promote the culture of peace in the region.
