11 July 10 - IDP youth football tournament prepares to kick off

11 July 2010 - UNAMID’s Communications and Public Information Division today presented leaders from three Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps near El Fasher, North Darfur, with equipment and jerseys to outfit six teams competing in an inter-community youth football tournament.

The ceremony was presided over by the Head of UNAMID’s North Darfur Office, Mr. Hassan Gibril, who praised the IDP leaders for being “ambassadors of peace in (their) communities, and collaborating with UNAMID in the search for lasting peace and enduring security in Darfur.

The competition was established to contribute to the development and empowerment of the region’s youth, encouraging them to eschew violence and channel their energy towards activities that unite communities, rather than divide them.

Thirty-six teams from Abu Shouk, Al Salam and Zamzam camps had participated in the preliminary level of the competition. Six teams, two from each camp, are now proceeding to the finals. The first match will take place on 13 July, with the two finalists competing for the cup on 18 July, Mandela Day.
