10 January 2011 - UNAMID Joint Special Representative (JSR) Ibrahim Gambari was today in Nyala and Khor Abeche, South Darfur, for meetings with local authorities, internally displaced persons (IDP), and Mission staff.

In Nyala, the JSR met with the Wali (Governor) of South Darfur and conducted a town hall meeting at the Mission’s regional headquarters.

The JSR then proceeded to Khor Abeche, where he met with the IDP community who expressed their gratitude to UNAMID for assistance received in the wake of last month’s attacks on the civilian population. While the Mission has been providing security, medical attention and water, the citizens expressed concern over the lack of sufficient shelter, food, and clothing.

Professor Gambari stated that peacekeepers would do everything in their power to assist.
