09 Sep 12 - Protecting civilians at forefront of UN Country Team – UNAMID coordination meeting

Khartoum, 9 September 2012 – Strengthening partnerships to better protect civilians was the focus of yesterday’s fourth coordination meeting between the UN Country Team (UNCT) and the African Union - United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID).

The event, held at the UN Development Programme’s (UNDP) headquarters in Khartoum, Sudan, was co-chaired by UNAMID Acting Joint Special Representative Aichatou Mindaoudou and UN Resident Coordinator/Humanitarian Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Sudan Ali Al-Za’tari.

In this meeting the UNCT and UNAMID discussed a multi-dimensional and community-based approach to protecting civilians and agreed that a joint committee would incorporate inputs proposed by the humanitarian community.

The Mission also used the occasion to update the Country Team on the security and political situation in the region and on the most recent developments concerning the implementation of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur.

Both the Country Team and the Mission renewed their commitment to work in support of the Doha Document, the Darfur Regional Authority and the ongoing Darfur Joint Assessment Mission in preparation for the Darfur Donors Conference, set to take place in Qatar in December 2012.

“I am confident that through collaboration we can help improve the lives of the people of Darfur,” said Ms. Mindaoudou in closing the meeting.
