09 Dec 10 - Activities promoting women’s rights in Nyala




09 December 2010 - UNAMID, in collaboration with the South Darfur Legislature and the State Committee for Combating Violence Against Women, organized today a workshop in Nyala on “Strengthening the Protection of Women through Legislation.” The event, organized in the framework of the 16-Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence and in celebration of Human Rights Day, was attended by 31 parliamentarians in the South Darfur Legislative Council.

 

The topics of discussion included the role of Islam in fighting violence against women, women's rights in national and international laws, forms of violence against women in times of war, and early marriage.

 

On 8 December, a one-day training was held at Nyala University aimed at increasing students’ awareness on Gender-Based Violence. The event was organized by UNAMID in coordination with the University.
