06 July 11 - JSR briefs UNAMID staff on Doha developments, introduces new Deputy Chief

06 July 2011 - Returning from a series of diplomatic visits including missions to Kigali, Rwanda, and the United Kingdom briefed peacekeepers on recent developments on the Darfur peace process including the outcome of the Darfur International Water Conference recently held in Khartoum and the All Darfur Stakeholders conference in Doha, Qatar.

The JSR also introduced the Mission’s new Deputy Joint Special Representatives (Political), Ms. Aichatou Mindaoudou from Niger who arrived on 30 June. Ms. Mindaoudou succeeds Gen. (Rtd) Henry Anyidoho who left the Mission more than a year ago.

Regarding the All Darfur conference in Doha, Mr. Gambari pointed out that the document had been well received by all stakeholders including the African Union and United Nations which would be signed by the Government of Sudan and the Liberation and Justice Movement next week.

“The way forward is to encourage the other parties to join the peace process, the people of Darfur have suffered for too long, too deeply,” said JSR Gambari, addressing UNAMID staff today at the Mission’s headquarters in El Fasher, North Darfur.
