Darfur Photo Exhibit launches in UN Headquarters
New York, 06 July 2011 – The African Union - United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) and United Nations Assistant Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) have launched a joint photo exhibit at the Visitor's Entrance of the United Nations Headquarters in New York titled "On the ground: UN Peace Operations in Afghanistan and Darfur."
The exhibition, which explores the lives of people in two places plagued by long years of conflict, features the joint work of Albert Gonzalez Farran, UNAMID photographer, and Fardin Waezi and Eric Kanalstein from UNAMA.
UNAMID’s section, named “Darfur up close,” concentrates on internally displaced people, efforts to assist them in returning home, the catastrophic effects of violence on the population and the work of the peacekeepers deployed with UNAMID, as well as other political and social events.
The photographs on Afghanistan focus on the everyday challenges Afghans face. Each image is a reflection of the daily struggle for survival encountered by Afghan men, women and children.
The show will continue until 31 July.
