04 Apr 11 - Tripartite meeting highlights visas, radio agreement

04 April 2011 - The outcome of a working-level meeting of the African Union, United Nations and Government of the Sudan Tripartite Mechanism has highlighted a higher level of continued cooperation between the three parties.

UNAMID Deputy Joint Special Representative Mohamed Yonis headed the Mission’s delegation at the meeting which took place in Khartoum on 31 March. The Sudanese Government’s envoys were led by Lt Gen Magzoub Rahma al-Badawi, Director of International Relations at the Ministry of Defense. The AU was represented by Senior Political Officer, Mr. Boitshoko Mokgatlhe.

The participants discussed a soon-to-be-signed Memorandum of Understanding between UNAMID and the Government, which would allow radio broadcasts by the Mission beginning from this month. Sudanese representatives also stated that their government would continue to approve visas for military, police and civilian peacekeepers.

All parties pledged their commitment to work together to ensure the successful implementation of UNAMID’s mandate.
