2 Jun 10 - Joint Chief Mediator for Darfur visits UNAMID




2 June 2010 - The AU-UN Joint Chief Mediator, Mr. Djibril Yipènè Bassolé, today visited the Headquarters of the African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID). During his visit, he met with Joint Special Representative (JSR), Professor Ibrahim Gambari. They discussed ways and means to enhance coordination and cooperation.

 

The two parties agreed to hold regular joint meetings and to work closely and in synergy to promote peace in Darfur. JSR Gambari pointed out that one of his main priorities is supporting the peace process and playing a more proactive role in this regard. He expressed the Mission’s readiness to further the peace process.

 

The Joint Chief Mediator briefed UNAMID senior officials on the latest developments concerning the peace process. He also received a comprehensive briefing on the security, political and humanitarian situation in Darfur.  Mr. Bassolé also paid a courtesy call on the Wali (Governor) of North Darfur, Mr. Osman Mohamed Yousif Kibir.
