UNAMID chief discusses conditions in Darfur with senior Sudanese officials

12 May 2009 -- The AU-UN Joint Special Representative for Darfur, Rodolphe Adada, held discussions today with the Undersecretary of the Sudanese Foreign Affairs Ministry, Mutrif Siddiq, and the Presidential Adviser, Mustafa Osman Ismail, during separate meetings in Khartoum.

At the two meetings various UNAMID-related topics, including the latest security, humanitarian and political conditions in Darfur, were reviewed.

Following his meeting with the Presidential Adviser, the JSR said in a statement to the press that it is an opportune time for re-energizing the momentum of the peace process and re-dedicating efforts to make the Doha peace talks a success. He reiterated UNAMID’s support of efforts by the AU-UN Chief Mediator for Darfur Djibril Yipènè Bassolé to help reach a comprehensive peace settlement for Darfur.

The JSR expressed concern over the recent inter-faction fighting that occurred in the area of Um Baru, North Darfur, stating that UNAMID has medically evacuated those who were injured in that fighting, and calling for a cessation of hostilities and a focus on the peace process instead.
