Closure of UNAMID

The United Nations – African Union Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) mandate ended on 31 December 2020 following UN Security Council Resolution 2559, concluding over a decade of peacekeeping efforts to stabilize Darfur and protect civilians.

Nigerian and Senegalese soldiers awarded peacekeeping medals

24 November 2008 -- Henry Anyidoho, UNAMID Principal Deputy Joint Special Representative (PDJSR) has today presided over the Medal Presentation Parade held at Sector West Headquarters in El Geneina, West Darfur. The Medals were presented to 679 peacekeepers from the 5th Nigerian Battalion (NIBATT V), 536 from the 5th Senegalese Battalion (SENBATT V) and another 84 Staff Officers, Liaison Officers and Military Observers.

In his address, the PDJSR commended the officers for their outstanding efforts for the promotion and fostering of peace in Darfur, adding " I praise and commend all peacekeepers including the Civilian Police (CIVPOL) in Sector West for their contributions to the Darfur peace process”.

The ceremony was attended by Government of Sudan (GoS) civilian and military officials as well as UNAMID senior staff.
