Closure of UNAMID

The United Nations – African Union Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) mandate ended on 31 December 2020 following UN Security Council Resolution 2559, concluding over a decade of peacekeeping efforts to stabilize Darfur and protect civilians.

One of the four formed police unit (FPU) from Togo, who sustained injures following an attack by unidentified gunmen on 20 April, was announced dead yesterday in UNAMID hospital.


FPU were on a routine patrol about 70 kilometres southeast of El Geneina, West Darfur, when they came under gunfire.

UNAMID was established on 31 July 2007 with the adoption of Security Council Resolution 1769. The mission was mandated to protect civilians, support humanitarian access, and promote peace and human rights in Darfur.
