PRESS RELEASE

Stakeholders agree on internal Darfur consultation

Doha, 31 May 2011 – The establishment of an internal Darfur dialogue and consultation, backed by an international monitoring committee, was among the main points agreed upon at the All Darfur Stakeholders Conference in Doha, Qatar. During the five-day discussions, representatives from the Sudanese government, armed movements, political parties, civil society groups, displaced persons and refugees discussed key issues in the conflict.

The outcomes of these talks were compiled in a final document, which will be distributed in the coming days and will be available for any and all parties to sign and endorse and will go toward forming the basis for a peace deal between the negotiating parties. The issues highlighted within have been identified as being linked to the root causes of the conflict and its consequences.

These points summarized today by the Qatari Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Ahmed Bin Abdullah Al-Mahmoud and the AU-UN Joint Chief Mediator, Djibril Bassolé, at the closing ceremony, chaired by the nation’s Prime Minister H.E. Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani. The event was attended by around 500 Darfuri representatives and delegates from the international community, including the League of Arab States, the Organisation of the Islamic Conference and a number of Special Envoys to the Sudan and Darfur.
