Closure of UNAMID

The United Nations – African Union Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) mandate ended on 31 December 2020 following UN Security Council Resolution 2559, concluding over a decade of peacekeeping efforts to stabilize Darfur and protect civilians.

06 July 11 - UNAMID Chief continues to seek release of detained colleagues

06 July 2011 - Following the detention of two UNAMID national staff, Idris Abdelrahman and Hawa Abdalla more than two months ago, UNAMID senior leadership continue to press the local authorities for the immediate release of their colleagues.

“We will do everything to secure their release,” stressed JSR Ibrahim Gambari.

On 25 May access was granted to UNAMID and Idris’ family in Nyala, South Darfur, he was reported to be well. JSR Gambari and Under-Secretary General for Field Support Ms. Susanna Malcorra, met with Ms. Hawa on 29 June in Khartoum where she is currently being held. She is reported to be well and denied all charges against her. Mr. Gambari has been in contact with her family, and assures them that the Mission will continue to engage the authorities of her release.
