Closure of UNAMID

The United Nations – African Union Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) mandate ended on 31 December 2020 following UN Security Council Resolution 2559, concluding over a decade of peacekeeping efforts to stabilize Darfur and protect civilians.

3 Aug 11 - Twenty Sudanese soldiers died due to heavy storm in El Geneina

3 August 2011 - Twenty Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) soldiers died and another 30 were injured yesterday in El Geneina, West Darfur, when two buildings where they were staying in collapsed as a result of heavy rain storms.

Following the tragedy, UNAMID assisted by providing a crane and other lifting equipment for debris clearance. UNAMID Head of Office in El Geneina and Sector West Commander visited the area of the incident and presented the Mission’s condolences to the SAF 15th Division Commander.
