Humanitarian response for areas affected by recent clashes in Darfur

04 March 2010 - According to UNAMID military and the Mission’s humanitarian liaison office and the humanitarian community, the security situation in the area of Jabel Marra, west Darfur, has remained uncertain. Clashes have caused displacements to a number of villages and internally displaced persons (IDP) settlements, mainly Nertiti, Guldo and Thur, in West Darfur.A UNAMID team from Kass and Nertiti in South Darfur, which is the closest UNAMID location, conducted verification patrol to villages around Derribat and Fanga Suk including Thur and Nyawu villages in North and South Darfur on 3 March. The team interacted with the Sheikhs (traditional leader) of the new arrivals who informed that about 7000 persons had been displaced to Thur in the last two weeks, and require humanitarian assistance.

UNAMID humanitarian liaison office in collaboration with humanitarian agencies on the ground is planning an assessment mission to the affected areas.
