The United Nations – African Union Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) mandate ended on 31 December 2020 following UN Security Council Resolution 2559, concluding over a decade of peacekeeping efforts to stabilize Darfur and protect civilians.

UNAMID peacekeeper killed in Nyala, South Darfur

El Fasher, 1 June 2017 — On 31 May 2017, a military peacekeeper from the African Union–United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) was killed by an unidentified group in a carjacking incident in Nyala, South Darfur State.

UNAMID strongly condemns this attack, which constitutes a violation of international law.

The incident has been reported to the relevant Sudanese authorities. UNAMID calls on the Government of Sudan to swiftly apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

The Mission extends its deepest condolences to the family of the late peacekeeper, his colleagues, and the Federal Government of Nigeria.
